For their 2009 production of Lucia di Lammermoor, the Met assembled perhaps the least Scottish-looking group of people on the planet.Almost all hail from beyond the former iron curtain, with the intended Mexican contingent, tenor Rolando Villazon, indisposed and replaced by Piotr Beczala, who was on site already for another role.

This is a strange performance, oddly unsatisfying. Natalie Dessay is a known quantity as Lucia: sensitive, fragile, using her small but colorful voice and sharp diction to show us poor Lucia’s plight. And indeed, her Mad Scene is marvelous, with the glass harmonica adding just the eerie touch Donizetti had hoped for. Dessay is just as fine in.

Lucia di Lammermoor is an opera in which the chorus gets some memorable outings, and the Met Chorus certainly does itself justice here.On the one hand, the nature of the chorus's interventions always makes them difficult to forget. On two occasions they express their great joy: once, at the supposedly forthcoming nuptials between Arturo and Lucia and later, when Lucia kills her bridegroom.

Lucia di Lammermoor is a tragic opera by Gaetano Donizetti, loosely based upon Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor, and with a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano. The opera is essentially Romeo and Juliet in Scotland. It follows Lucia Ashton and Edgardo di Ravenswood, two Star-Crossed Lovers.

On a sunlit afternoon just outside of the Lammermoor Castle, there is a bit of frantic commotion. It is believed an intruder is running about the castle grounds. Maybe the greatest challenge is Lucia di Lammermoor, a role Natalie Dessay has already recorded complete in the French version. Here we get it in the original, so original in fact that a glass harmonica plays the obbligato instead of the flute to which Donizetti later changed it. This lends the aria an eerie quality that I suspect Donizetti was.

Lucia di Lammermoor is based on Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, in turn based on a true story. Scott’s novels and poems provided inspiration for many operas in the 19th century, including Rossini ’s La donna del lago (performed by The Royal Opera in 2013).
